In what’s being seen as a harbinger of entertainment industry strategies to come, Warner Brother’s movie and games divisions are working hand in holster to develop Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry cop character into a long term video game franchise.
As part of the process, all five Dirty Harry movies will be withdrawn from sale on Sept 1, and will be placed on moratorium for more than a year.
Next Autumn, after new high definition transfers have been completed, they will be released on HD DVD and Blu-ray, with special footage and hidden features, simultaneously with the first Dirty Harry next generation video game, which is being developed in conjunction with Eastwood’s Malpaso company.
The cross platform launch is expected to be one of the biggest in Warner history. Eastwood will provide the voice for his game character. Gene Hackman and Laurence Fishburne have also signed on for voice duties.
According to CEO Barry Meyer, it’s all part of mining the Warner library. “We intend to extend our intellectual properties over many platforms,” he says.
