A massive take-up of internet TV services will bring the telcoms industry into direct conflict with the traditional TV broadcast market, according to a new survey iSuppli Corp.
The tech-trend analyst says the number of subscribers to IPTV services will hit 63 million by 2010, creating a market worth more than 27 billion dollars.
IPTV subscriber levels are expected to top five million in 2006. According to Mark Kirstein, iSuppli’s vice president for multimedia content and services, “The fight to capture the expanding base of IPTV subscribers will put telecom operators on a collision course with existing pay-TV market competitors as they roll-out progressively more sophisticated offerings.”
iSuppli believes the market will evolve quickly from the basic services currently being trialed, to highly interactive services which fully integrate video, music, games and information.
