Plasma TV sales are booming. According to the latest market data from Displaysearch, shipments of plasma screens are up 95 percent year-on-year. Worldwide sales over the past quarter hit 2.2 million units, which means that plasma now accounts for 20 per cent of all worldwide TV hardware revenue.
There’s been a dramatic uptake in China, and US sales now eclipse Europe. North America accounts for 63 percent of 50-inch plasma sales worldwide, over the last quarter.
The most popular screen size is 42-inches, and the biggest brand remains Panasonic, which has a 21.5 percent market share. The Japanese giant is followed by Korean heavyweights LG and Samsung with 17.7 percent and 14 percent share, respectively.
Panasonic says it has increased its panel capacity by 50 percent this year to cope with growing demand, and predicts that it will double its plasma TV sales to four million units during this financial year.
