Sony says that it is now in a position to begin the mass-production of blue-violet laser diodes. The company says that its subsidiary Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor can now make 1.7 million units a month, which should enable it to compete against blue laser diodes from Sharp (expected to make 500,000 units a month by the end of the year) and Nichia Corp, which is raising monthly capacity to two million units. Volume production will also help Sony ease the manufacturing cost of its Blu-ray products.
