In a surprise move, Sharp has announced that it has taken a 14.28 per cent stake in rival Pioneer. The two companies say that they will now co-operate on producing next-generation products, such as Blu-ray players and network products, and pool production resources. The most obvious question though is how the two brands, one a staunch plasma supporter and the other a leader in LCD, will reconcile their global screen strategies. It can only be a matter of time before LCD screens bearing the Pioneer brand appear, but will Sharp also start offering plasma? And what future for the Pioneer’s well-received Kuro line of plasma TV displays? More news as we get it.
