Resident Evil: Extinction will be the first Blu-ray movie from Sony Pictures to offer BD Java-powered picture-in-picture. The title will be released in the US on January 1. PIP will be part of an advanced BD Java bonus section dubbed Under the Umbrella, which will also incorporate storyboards, production photos, behind-the-scenes material and interviews. Also included on the disc is a preview of Resident Evil: Degeneration, an all-CGI addition to the franchise. Ironically, Sony itself does not market any Blu-ray player able to access the PIP function. It says it will launch its first Profile 1.1 compatible players later in 2008.
