Copy-protection company Macrovision is in the process of acquiring assets from Cryptography Research which will give it ownership of the controversial BD+ technology (aka Self Protecting Digital Content) used by Fox Home Entertainment on its Blu-ray releases.
Explains Fred Amoroso, CEO of Macrovision: “The integration of SPDC into our product portfolio will enable us to continue to provide innovative technology to our customers as they expand their distribution vehicles. Not only is BD+ critical for content security, but it also supports value-added features that enhance the consumer playback experience such as potentially unlocking bonus content.”
Discs encoded with BD+ have caused playback issues with certain Blu-ray machines on the market, necessitating that owners locate, burn and load firmware updates for their players.
