Hitachi is to close its Australian operation. The move comes as pressures mount on its global consumer electronics business. The Japanese giant has announced that it will close its Australian subsidiary and pull out of the Australia CE Market on February 29.
In a message to dealers, Hitachi Australia MD Yutaka Sugihara says: ‘Hitachi has decided to withdraw from the Australian consumer electronics market. This decision is part of a refocusing of Hitachi’s sales strategy for consumer electronic products throughout the world. As a result, Hitachi Australia Pty Ltd will cease sale of consumer electronics products in Australia by 29 February 2008.’
All eyes will now be on Hitachi’s European operation which has also been under growing pressure following the slide in retail prices of flat screen TVs. Currently, the company plans on introducing its radical Ultra Thin range of LCD TVs into Europe this Spring.
